The Adige Valley funnels warm air upward so reliably that pilots have measured usable lift here on more than 250 days a year. That thermal engine — not the scenery — is why Merano became one of the earliest free-flight centres in the Alps.
The basin sits at roughly 325 metres above sea level, ringed by slopes that climb past 2,700 metres within a few horizontal kilometres. Sun strikes the eastern flanks first, warming rock and terraced vineyard, and the heated air lifts along the valley walls. Free flight arrived in South Tyrol in the late 1970s, when the first hang-glider pilots walked their frames up the pastures above Dorf Tirol. Paraglider wings followed in the mid-1980s. Within a decade, launch sites at Hirzer, Vigiljoch and Muthöfe had been formalised, and paragliding tandem meran flights became a fixture of the local mountain economy alongside apple harvests and spa tourism.
Geography explains the concentration. Vigiljoch, reached by a cable car running since 1912, offers a launch above Lana with the Ortler group on the western horizon. The Hirzer, at 2,781 metres, sits on the Sarntal ridge and delivers the region's longest sustained descents. Dorf Tirol, perched beneath the twelfth-century Schloss Tirol that gave the entire province its name, provides the shortest transfer from the town centre. Each site faces a different quadrant, so pilots can chase working air as the day rotates.
Regulation grew alongside the sport. Italian tandem pilots must hold a biennial licence with logged flight hours, and wings are inspected on a fixed cycle. Operators launching over Merano work within airspace shared with the Bolzano approach corridor, which fixes ceilings and keeps traffic patterns disciplined. This is not improvised adventure tourism; it is a codified alpine profession.
What a tandem paragliding tour over Merano reveals is a landscape organised by water and terracing. The Passer river cuts north to south through the town. Waalwege — the medieval irrigation channels that still feed the orchards — trace contour lines across the slopes, visible from the air as thin horizontal seams. Castles appear in sequence: Schloss Tirol, Brunnenburg, Thurnstein. The Texel Group Nature Park, protected since 1976, fills the northern view with 33,430 hectares of high terrain.
